A Modular System of Relief Printmaking Matrices for the Platen Press.

Devised for a Fine Art Practical PhD at the School of Art Aberystwth.

The Modular System is an adaptation of letterpress, wood engraving and woodcut procedures that generates unexpected imagery through offset printing. Left: chases and registration devices with reusable engraved polymer blocks in place. They are printed onto lino or vinyl cuts, shown below right, next to prints from Alberslines Nine series. These show reversed imagery and tonal inversions from offsetting. The system has precedence in historical solutions for simultaneous colour printing: the Mentz Psalter 1475, William Congreve's compound plates 1820, and John Holt Ibbetson's segmented wood engravings of 1819.
